The Pueblo Tribe is one of the most distinct and interesting native tribes. They were represented by a delegation of about twenty men from Santa Clara. The Pueblo Indians live in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, and Colorado. They have been living there for about 500 years. They also grow crops and use cotton to make clothing. Mostly all towns in the Pueblo have Spanish names to there Indian name. They elect a governor, or chief, every year. Now there governor is Diego Naranjo. There are 4 tribes of Eastern Pueblo Indians the Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, and Towa. The Western Pueblos are represented by 2 tribes the Hopi and Zuni. The Pueblo speak many different languages three of the main languages are Uto-Aztecan, Keresan, and Tanoan.

Pueblo Area and Eviroment

The Pueblo Eviroment was much diffrent than what it is today. Back than, the weather was a lot cooler and wetter, there were glaciers on top of Mountains such as, the Sandria Mountains. Also there were small swallow lakes called playas. Lastly animals such as mammoths, saber- toothed tigers, and dire wolves lived there. Pueblos today collect plants and seeds, and people moved campsites to diffrent places, mostly over great distances. At least 8,000 - 9,000 years ago the Pueblo Tribe started growing population and started losing plants and crops, and smaller places were left for hunting. Their food lasted for a while at least until the birth of Jesus. For that thier enviroment began to change. Things started scooping out of the sand they, were covered with brush roofs. They were about 5,000 years old. Around 500 B.C the first evidence the Pueblos found were one of the greatest changes they found. It was agriculture of the growing of corn. The Pueblos life changed that same year. All thier lives were focused on agriculture. Pueblo's still hunted and gathered animals.

Pueblo Customs and Traditions

The Pueblo have certain Customs and Traditions which are dances which made a very important part in the Native American Tribes. The Pueblo dance the Sun and Rain dance. Dances were used to call spirits and to heal the sick and wounded. During festivals they would paint there face white to represent happiness. They did similare to what we do today which is dance and play games. One thing that is different is they thanked the spirits for good harvest. They wrote pottery made of clay dug out from the earth. The clay is put into tin sheets left to dry. After it dries it is soaked in water and stained in a big screen. Next they put a type of sand called tuff. They keep doing this until it is pottery. They believed in the great spirit who is there God. They believe he created all things. The earth was considered the "Mother Of All Spirits". They prayed individually and in groups. They believed visions in dreams came from the spirits. They thought Kachinas were spirits who came back with the clouds and rains to help their people. They believed those spirits once lived among their tribe. People did not pay attention to them so they got mad and left. After they had left the Pueblo held ceremonies were they asked the Kachinas to bring rain and make their crops grow.
